Story and Character.
Creating a character is a complex process. In the games industry, it is often considered that many characters follow strict stereotypes and do not develop throughout the narrative. The use of a 'silent protagonist' is a common technique applied to a number of games which allows the consumer to develop the role themselves through their actions and create a deeper level of immersion. The consumer becomes the character rather than watching him. This has its disadvantages and can hinder the overall portrayal of a games story. Looking at characters such as Oskar Schindler, Hannibal Lector, Travis Bickle and Hamlet, they are iconic because of how they were created. The foundations of these characters were built upon your typical archetype hero or villian, yet they all own their unique and individual behaviour. Their language syntax varys from slow and spinless to and enigmatic and eccentric. Their physical attributes vary from overweight to athletic. Their morale motivations are never clear and the actors who portray them personify their brilliance. It's about time computer games took inspiration from its entertainment predeccesors and creat some worthwhile characters.
