As a creative designer I have always felt that art resides within all manners of trades; design, style, music, culture, lifestyle and technology. This video is a beautiful example of what makes art such an ambiguous articulation.
Not only is this video a visual representation of what is conveyed in Kanye Wests music, it delivers a story, a message and a relevance to its audience. At the heart of it, it's story of a phoenix played by lingerie model Selita Ebanks who falls down from the cosmos. She is rejected for her differences while on earth is eventually torn away from West and returns to her own realm. The video is developed through a number of set pieces representing each song, each one with their own unique sound and visual direction which is what makes this feature such a rich and colourful venture. For example the song 'Runaway' upon which the video is titled, has a particularly striking scene which takes place amongst a banquet in an abandoned warehouse. The gestures and movement portrayed through the ballerina scene just personifies the mood and tone of the track, whenever Kanye would sing the chorus a strong, bold movement would be performed by the dancers emulating the power of the music. Especially noticeable when freeze frame scene occurs.
When it comes to superstars and the illusion of art, fashion, design and creativity it is rewarding to be aware of what makes it credible. Some people such as Pharell Williams, Angelina Jolie and David Beckham are highly regarded icons yet you need to realise the difference between those that create art, and those that can just afford it.
